Traditional Liposuction

Liposuction is the removal of unwanted lumps, bulges, and areas of fat using thin suction tubes (cannula) that are placed into the body fat through small incisions. A vacuum is applied through a hose attached to the cannula. This draws fat out of the body.

Liposuction is typically performed in an operating room under general anesthesia. Due to the risk of anesthesia, time is of the essence and larger instruments are used to speed fat removal. As a result, irregularities are more frequent and loose, stretched-out skin is not treated. Traditional liposuction is generally quite costly and has higher risk associated with the procedure and recovery.

Tumescent Liposuction

With tumescent liposuction, a large volume of natural saline solution, containing very dilute amounts of a local anesthetic and adrenaline, are dispersed into the fatty tissue. The fat is then removed through a small cannula inserted into the skin. After tumescent liposuction procedures, many patients may get up and walk out of the office without assistance. Most patients are usually back to their regular routine in a couple of days.

Vaser LipoSelection

Vaser LipoSelection uses ultrasound energy to break down the fat cells before they are removed. These ultrasound waves are transmitted through small probes located on the cannula. This causes less injury to the surrounding tissues than traditional liposuction.

Vaser offers several benefits over traditional liposuction, yet there are some drawbacks to this procedure. It is a relatively extensive body contouring procedure, and there will be noticeable scars left from the incision site. Other drawbacks include pain and numbness in the treated area, a waiting period of up to six months to see complete results, and a risk of seroma and/or inflammation.
